Egyptian Lover – “Everything She Wants”

With the TR-808 making a comeback, it makes sense we’d see new music surface from Egyptian Lover, too. I’m talking hardware, not music trends: Roland has actually dropped a brand new “TR-1000” to mark the 40th anniversary of their iconic gear, affordably priced at two and a half stacks. The 808 sound, of course, has been ubiquitous for decades. Christ, the entire FM radio band has been colonized by machines here in 2026. Even the country singles are trying to rattle your trunk.

“Everything She Wants” is not a country single, but it sounds every bit as dated as Merle Haggard or Moe Bandy. That’s quite deliberate. After four decades of rocking parties and touring with the same stage setup he had when Uncle Jamm’s Army ruled LA, this living legend has zero need to change up the formula. Like David Allan Coe or Too $hort, he’s a vintage freak with a timeless style.

“We didn’t call it electro, we just called it hip-hop back in the day.” There are remarkably few duds in the Red Bull Music Academy archives, but Egyptian Lover’s session is among the best. He’s hilarious, first of all, but he also had a completely unique perspective on the explosion of hip hop in Los Angeles and beyond. Like Sade or Prince, he was an outsider in his own genre despite his massive success. That kind of detachment allows for some rare clarity on an industry full of egos, drugs and bullshit.

This video isn’t low budget: these were all real shoots on real sets. It’s just so completely out of step with contemporary trends it amounts to a total anachronism, an artifact out of time. This would have been huge in 1991, but decades later, the DIY seams are too obvious to look top shelf professional. “Professional” is a mansion with many rooms, of course. For the event planner who let them use that wedding hall set, this is a hell of a reel, but music videos are basically feature films in 2026.

That doesn’t mean they’re good, though. Hell, even the feature films are mostly fucking terrible these days. So the biggest fault with “Everything She Wants” is only that it all goes on for too long; there just aren’t enough sets or shots to justify the runtime. That is one of the many reasons we thank God for the DJ. Nobody needs almost five minutes of this joint, but you drop it in at the right moment and it’s going to kill an entire dance floor.

So consider this an Extended Mix of a new jam from an old dog who’s had an Extended Mix of a career. While Egyptian Lover exists beyond genre, reproach or critique, certain standards must be upheld. The beat is crisp & smoking but the vocals hit like an afterthought. This ain’t his best song but it’s still better than any of the EDM pop bullshit you’ll hear in the club these days. Three Dickies. Long may he reign.
